LG TV (webOS) transcode only audio?

Post by knifeyspooney »

Hey all,

My new LG tv can't handle DTS audio. I'm having trouble figuring out the settings so that a 4K mkv will play without transcoding the video, but with transcoding only the audio from DTS to a format the LG can handle.

My current LG-WebOS.conf is attached.

When I attempt to play the file from the main directory, video and audio play but it is definitely transcoding the video and looks very lossy. When I play the same file from within the Transcode folder and select 'No Transcoding' the video looks fantastic, but no audio plays.

What am I missing in the config to have it leave the video as-is, but transcode the audio to AC-3, or something similar?

the first attempt at playing is below:

Re: LG TV (webOS) transcode only audio?

Post by wurstpistole »

I never got DTS files working with my LG OLED. Even after commenting out DTS of the configuration, which should force UMS to transcode DTS to AC3 didn't work. I fumbled around with that to the point that I just went over to converting DTS to AC3 with an ffmpeg command line prompt, that saves me the headache of trying to get it transcoded on the fly.
If anyone has any other suggestion that works, I'll be glad to hear.

AC3 transcode from DTS works for me (C1), check the support thread for my config.

Thanks - my issue isn't that I can't get DTS to transcode to AC3, that is working fine for me -- my issue is that I only want audio transcoding, with no video transcoding. My LG keeps transcoding both audio and video resulting in a very lossy video quality.

I did try your config file here (viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15142&p=45640#p45640) but same results for me - audio is transcoding OK from DTS to AC3, but video is also transcoding from source HEVC H265 to H264 and looking very lossy.

I'm trying to force audio to transcode without touching the video. Is this possible?

No problem, but why is HEVC being transcoded? For me it streams, and audio is transcoding if needed. My current config is: I just delete all LG* renderers in the renderers dir and add only as per attachment.

Yep, that's the question indeed. I don't know why it keeps insisting on transcoding the HEVC video when the LG TV supports it fine. (Playing the video in the Transcode folder with no transcoding works perfectly for video, but doesn't play the audio due to the DTS format).

I tried your config again and it's still transcoding both audio and video.

I was just testing it. I have a sound bar with DTS support, even then it doesn't work and DTS is not possible. Same situation with direct casting the file (without UMS). DTS possible only on PS5 with BR discs.

When I choose "No Transcoding" the video is fine, but no DTS sound.

When I choose FFMPEG / DTSHD, it transcodes audio + video.

So I guess I have the same problem. :D

Ha, I appreciate this follow up. Glad I'm not going nuts.

I did find a custom FFMpeg setting that just copies the video, no transcoding, and transcodes just the audio. When I use that the audio works, and the video looks fantastic and is HEVC... for the first 20 seconds or so, then the video scrambles 3/4s of the screen leaving only the top left 1/4 playing visible video. So, I guess I have a new problem now...

If your TV supports passing though the DTS to your soundbar with ARC then you can edit your conf to add dts or dtshd in the supported formats section so UMS will not transcode it automatically.

Yes, the problem is that LG dropped DTS support altogether since 2020 I think. It won't even allow pass-through.
