Well Furk me! (thoughts on Furk please)

Post by S7eele »

I know of at least two ways to utilize Furk via UMS, Channels and Jumpy (much thx sharkhunter and infidel, respectively). I have tested both using a free Furk account but have of course run up against the limits imposed until you purchase a premium account. Unfortunately this cut into my testing time but AFAIK both work. I really like what I have seen but would love to hear any experiences or thoughts others might have on the use of Furk, with or without UMS. Specifically concerning reliability of the site (retention/availability of data stored there), support services and privacy/security matters. Legality is pretty black and white but I would love any information regarding FURK as compared to using a privacy service (proxy/vpn) and storing torrents locally. I know disk space is cheap now but I am one broke SOB. That is one of the reasons I love this software so much, UMS is key in turning my somewhat dated equipment into a more than decent home theater system. I know I am not the only one either, I have seen many posts from other users indicating the same. Thanks all!
Peace!

If we leave the legal discussion out of the picture and without saying too much I must say that I've used Furk and must say I'm pleased. Most of the time there are no issues what so ever the streaming works perfectly. Sometimes I get the stream to freeze after a while but that might just be mencoder/ffmpeg/curl/lunar storm/your pick goes here, but if you look at the same video again it works like a charm.
So far I haven't have any problems with Furk beeing gone more than what can be expected (hey my whole internet was gone a week). If you are looking for a "popular" torrent it is already there and you can access it directly if you are looking for some more exotic stuff you'll have to wait for seeders (just like if you download it yourself).

As for privacy:
All streaming etc. takes place over HTTPS which at least makes it more "secure". But I'm not having any illusions of that if NSA (and it's likes in other countries) can see what your up too. So it is up to you to decide what level of moral etc. you got.

As a side legal note (although don't quote me I'm an engineer) in some countries streaming is "legal" while downloading is illegal. This has of course not been tested in any court but if it is so then using UMS+furk is perfectly fine AS LONG AS you don't save the stream....

If you ask me you should of course use Channels+Furk since you can go in via EZTV (and other sites I won't mention) and find the stuff you want to see and then automatically (and seamlessly) jump over to Furk and just start streaming :)
We reject: kings, presidents and voting.
We believe in: rough consensus and running code.

Exactly what I was looking for bud, thanks. Yeah, the availability of popular torrents is awesome. I also really like the plugins you can use in both Chrome/FireFox are great and the ones in XBMC are awesome as far as I can tell with a free account. I think I will be trying a premium account. You hit another area that I was thinking about but had no real knowledge of, specifically dl'ing vs. streaming. I was thinking that at the very least it would be minimally more "safe". I am definitely trying to use Channels but I am starting my install over as I have mentioned in that other thread. I had it working but now its driving me crazy. If I could get 1Channel, IceFilms and NaviX working through Channels I would be in heaven. I would love to run Jumpy as well but Channels for sure.
Peace!
