AVI files do not play, must be transcoded

Hi all,
I reinstalled recently after trying to resolve and issue where all of my UMS videos show as having icons/thumbnails from a cartoon series (still haven't fixed that one).
Anyone trying to play some old AVIs of TV Series, and they are constantly and consistently failing to play, and have to manually select via transcode.
Please help
