Media server project

Hello,

I am a Master's student. I am studying communications. I have set myself a goal to research QoS parameters in Media Servers(The open source ones). I will do this thoroughly but I require some assistance. Since I have very little knowledge of Media Servers mechanisms I need some advice.

Google isn't giving me any valid references on Media Servers. Can somebody please give me some valid reference on Media Servers so I can make an introduction to my papers? Wikipedia isn't a valid reference. I need some paper, or article which explains Media Server architecture or at least what its architecture is related to.

I know some protocols being used in Streaming Media, but Media Server applications are very little mentioned other than downloads :D

Thanks

Google for UPNP and DLNA, those are the basic technologies were most media servers are based on. Particularly http://www.dlna.org/ has a lot of resources and pointers to additional info.
I hope it helps, Wolf

Thank you.

When I finish my project, I will translate it and post it here. Some of you might find it useful.

I will generally use wireshark to capture packets and do some analysis.

It would also help if somebody can tell me the software that works on PC with UMS. Because I cannot detect files when i try to stream via my laptop.

My setup will be :

wireshark <<<< PC (UMS)<-----> Router <-----> Laptop (some client) >>>> wireshark

I can detect UMS on my WMP but cannot see any files. I need an alternative, which surely works on Windows 8.1.
